You may have heard that our film program will be undergoing major changes beginning in November. Many of our patrons have been in touch via email, Facebook, and Twitter to voice their concerns about these changes, which include a hiatus in our weekend film series. We’d like to give you a place to share your opinions with the museum’s leaders and with each other as well. Staff members in Communications and LACMA Director Michael Govan will be a part of the conversation, answering questions and shedding light where we can. For more information on the status of the film program, click here for the director’s statement to staff.

One $140.00 check for a renewal plus the CineClub is in the mail, with the following letter to LACMA:

It is unfortunate that you presented the CineClub to the community’s representatives on September 1st as a done deal instead of reaching out to them in the planning stages and working with them to ...

Even if we posit that the Classic History of Film is a highly codified art-form like Classical Opera, we would have still have to ask: WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR OPERA HOUSE?

Even highly codified classical art forms deserve respect, don’t they? We don’t want them to be sleeping under bridges or be out in the rain. An encyclopedic museum seems like a good home for a high...

If money is really a problem, why don’t you negotiate Mr. Koons down on the price of the train?

If he will make it for $20,000,000 that would give you the $5,000,000 you want for the film program, and fund much critical thinking and new programming (just not at the Bing on Friday and Saturday...

Scene from a movie of the imagination: “Govan” ends with a dream sequence based on Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow:

“Long shot of ragged, freezing curators retreating through the snow while Govan’s carriage gallops on ahead and vanishes in the distance… [Fade to black]… THE END.”

If September 1st does not lead to a compromise solution, what options do we have?

Our generals will bravely ride to meet the foe on Tuesday. But they may fall like Roland at Roncesvalles, like the 300 at Thermopylae, like Hector before the walls of Troy. After the 1st what can ...

We need a new adjective to describe an inflated ambition to leave one’s mark upon the history of art.

I suggest “govanesque” (O.E.D. note first use here). Example: “He struck a govanesque pose, and declaimed against the classic history of film.”
